The Petition

petitionAlthough your school may already have an Earth Club, chances are they don’t have a Students for Solar Schools chapter. The Petition will make your group known across the school and legitimize your project. Also, probably the most important part of the petition is the people who will want to join the cause as a result of it. Four of the core members of my team at Westlake joined as a result of hearing about SSS through the petition. Click to download the petition here.

So here are the benefits:

  • You will get school-wide publicity
  • It will help interested people hear about your project and join your team
  • It will legitimize your project in the eyes of students, teachers and the administration

Here are the cautions:

  • Make sure you don’t spend too long on it! (2 weeks Max!)
  • Remember that the amount of signatures really doesn’t matter so don’t run to your school administrator and say “See I have 500 signatures, Solar Panels please!” (this is not the purpose of the petition)
  • Be sure to speak to your school administration soon. Don’t think of the petition as going against the school, but rather as a test of student body interest

Petition got me into school newspaper, I found my core team, got me a teacher advisor, was confident in speaking to district. Got an email list of supportive people.

Learned some people don’t know what solar panels are. Importance of education.

Don’t run to your school administrator and say “See I have 500 signatures, Solar Panels please!”
